Middle schoolers often struggle to understand the needs of others — not because they lack empathy, but because they haven't always been taught how to express it in meaningful ways. Through this project, our 5th–7th grade students will learn to practice compassion by creating \"Comfort Kits\" for peers who may be struggling — whether due to stress, mental health, physical illness, or simply a tough day.\r\n\r\nEach kit contains a small fidget toy to help reduce anxiety, a snack to provide comfort and energy, and a bottle of Gatorade to encourage hydration and wellness. More importantly, students add handwritten notes of encouragement, practicing how to express kindness, emotional awareness, and thoughtful support.\r\n\r\nStudents will take part in guided reflections, role-playing, and discussions that help them imagine what it feels like to face emotional, physical, or social hardship. They'll be asked to recall times they felt overwhelmed or alone and consider what actions or words would have helped. These reflective activities build both insight and the confidence to act kindly when it matters most.\r\n\r\nCreating and distributing Comfort Kits gives students a hands-on way to make someone's day better. We'll measure the project's impact through reflection journals, group discussions, post-project surveys, and ongoing observation of student behavior.
