As a first-time DonorsChoose teacher, I had no idea how meaningful this experience would become. A wonderful former colleague encouraged me to give it a try, and I am so grateful I did.\r\n\r\nMy vision was to give students the opportunity to paint superhero artwork and freely create as a reward for demonstrating positive behavior. When I began, I had only a small list of students who had earned the opportunity. Even before the project was fully funded, I created a list of eligible students and announced our painting day. In the meantime, students began daydreaming and sketching ideas for the artwork they hoped to create once we received our supplies.\r\n\r\nWhat happened next exceeded my expectations! Students began asking their teachers to send notes recognizing their positive behavior and recommending them for additional opportunities to participate. The excitement has been so great that I have had to cut watercolor paper in half and carefully stretch our paint supplies to accommodate more young artists.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts is seeing students from technology, band, and choir participate in art experiences they might not otherwise have during the school year. One parent even purchased a watercolor book for their child in anticipation of three painting opportunities. Inspired by the success of the project, another parent donated 200 sheets of watercolor paper so students could continue painting more consistently.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has reminded me just how much art matters. My students with IEPs and 504 plans are creating beautiful, remarkable pieces of artwork. Their peers are getting the opportunity to see them in a new light—not through their challenges, but through their creativity, imagination, and ability to create something extraordinary.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, students are discovering their talents, celebrating their accomplishments, and experiencing the joy of artistic expression.
