Because of your generosity, my students now have the tools to dive deeper into history with more engagement, confidence, and curiosity than ever before. The interactive notebooks and classroom materials you helped provide are helping students organize their thoughts, annotate primary sources, and visually track historical timelines in ways that make abstract concepts feel real and relevant. In a world where many students are more used to swiping on screens than flipping through textbooks, these tools bridge that gap—offering a hands-on, student-centered way to learn and analyze the past.\r\n\r\nWhat's most exciting for the students is how empowered they feel when they can physically manipulate history—color-coding key events, layering timelines, and even building out creative responses that reflect their understanding. One student who had struggled to stay organized and focused during class is now leading the way, using his interactive notebook as a personal toolkit for historical thinking. He told me, \"It finally makes sense now.\" That kind of breakthrough, that spark, is what this project was all about. You've given our students more than supplies—you've given them confidence, voice, and a deeper connection to the world around them. Thank you for making history come alive in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1746785768951,"projectUrl":"project/history-in-their-hands-building-the-pas/9258706/","projectTitle":"History in Their Hands: Building the Past, Empowering the Future","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Stalf","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8437751_orig.png?crop=1305,1305,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747103592192","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8437751"},{"teacherId":5806285,"projectId":9086937,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous donation, our classroom has been filled with excitement, motivation, and a renewed sense of purpose. The items you helped provide became part of a classroom incentive store, which rewards students for demonstrating our core values: being determined, achieving, thriving, engaged, and responsible. Students earned points for positive behaviors like arriving to class on time, starting their work independently, helping classmates, and participating in discussions—and they were thrilled to exchange those points for meaningful rewards.\r\n\r\nWhen we opened the store for the first time, the students' faces lit up with excitement. Many couldn't believe they had the chance to choose from stickers featuring their favorite characters or grab a favorite snack as a reward for their hard work. It created a tangible connection between their efforts and a positive outcome, which boosted morale and reinforced the behaviors we want to see more of. Even students who were typically disengaged began working toward these goals with real enthusiasm.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're continuing to build on this momentum by keeping the store a regular part of our classroom culture. Students are already setting personal goals to earn more points and are showing greater consistency in meeting expectations. Share a specific classroom project or moment.\r\nWe've been using the new materials to launch our 9th Grade Success initiative, focusing on building strong habits around responsibility, goal setting, and respectful classroom behavior. One recent project involved students creating personal \"Success Plans\" using the journals and goal-tracking tools provided. During advisory, students reflected on their current habits, set short- and long-term academic goals, and created visual representations of what success looks like for them. It's been powerful to see students take ownership of their behavior and progress.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nThey were genuinely excited—many commented that the materials made them feel \"seen\" and supported. The journals especially were a hit; some students who are typically more reserved even shared how they were looking forward to using them as a private space to process their thoughts. Others appreciated how the posters and anchor charts helped clarify expectations and gave them reminders to stay on track throughout the day.\r\n\r\nYour donors got a little peek into your classroom by contributing to your project, and we know that they'd love to learn more. What are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\nNext, students will participate in peer mentoring sessions where they share their personal growth strategies and support one another in reaching their goals. We'll also begin tracking positive behavior trends and celebrating milestones, both individually and as a class. These resources have laid the foundation for building a stronger 9th grade culture, and our students are stepping up as leaders in their own learning and behavior. We've been using the maps, globes, and hands-on materials to explore different regions, analyze geographic patterns, and make connections to history and current events.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting moments was when we launched a \"Where in the World?\" challenge. Students worked in teams using the new materials to solve location-based riddles, applying their map skills and critical thinking to uncover clues. Seeing their excitement and collaboration as they pointed out locations, discussed landmarks, and debated routes was a true highlight!\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were amazed! Many had never seen a detailed world map up close, and their curiosity was immediately sparked. Some excitedly pointed out places they or their families are from, while others eagerly searched for locations they had only read about. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and engagement right from the start.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're diving into a project where students will research a country of their choice, using the geography resources to examine climate, landforms, and human-environment interactions. They'll present their findings, helping their classmates discover new places and cultures. We've used these texts to teach key reading skills like analyzing character development, identifying author's purpose, and drawing connections between historical events and present-day issues. Students are learning how to question who tells the story and why certain voices have been left out. These books are sparking rich discussions and deepening critical thinking in ways that go far beyond a typical textbook.\r\n\r\nWhat does reading look like in your classroom?\r\nReading in our classroom is dynamic and student-centered. You'll see small reading groups deep in discussion, students journaling their thoughts, and others working together to compare characters across texts. There's a strong focus on making personal connections—how the themes of courage, resilience, and social change show up in students' own lives. Whether students are annotating a page or sharing a favorite quote, there's a buzz of curiosity and engagement that fills the room.\r\n\r\nAre there particular students who are especially enjoying the new books, and how so?\r\nAbsolutely. One of our English Language Learners recently picked up I Am Malala and told me it was the first time she saw someone with a story similar to her own. Another student who typically struggles with reading hasn't put down Hidden Figures—he's fascinated by how these brilliant women used math and science to change history. These books are helping students see themselves—and each other—in new and empowering ways.
