The boxes of Oreos are sitting on my classroom shelves, and students keep spotting them and asking what we're going to do with all those cookies. They are very curious, and I can't wait for them to find out!\r\n\r\nIn December, we'll be kicking off our space unit by exploring the phases of the moon in one of my favorite hands-on lessons. Students will use Oreo cookies to create models of the different moon phases, carefully removing the cream to show how the moon appears to change throughout its cycle. It's such a fun, visual way to help young learners understand a concept that can otherwise be tricky to picture. And, of course, getting to enjoy a cookie afterward makes the lesson even more memorable!\r\n\r\nI've done this activity with students before, and it's always a favorite. I love watching them make connections between what they've created and the moon they see in the night sky. It's a wonderful reminder that learning can be both meaningful and fun.\r\n\r\nThis activity will also launch our exploration of space, where students will continue asking questions, investigating, and learning about the world beyond Earth.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this experience possible for our students! Our school year is just getting started, but I am already so excited about all the places these books will take us.\r\n\r\nWe just started exploring geography with Me on the Map, helping students understand their place in the world, from their own homes and neighborhoods to our country and beyond. Next, we'll be taking that learning further as we explore America's national parks! Students will become park rangers, create their own park maps using rice and pom-poms to design landscapes and landmarks, and make torn-paper artwork inspired by the beautiful places we're discovering. Each activity paired with one of our new books.\r\n\r\nAnd that's just the beginning! Our new mystery books will inspire students to become detectives, uncovering secret messages with UV flashlights and investigating their own fingerprints. As winter approaches, stories about snow and winter animals will lead us into sensory investigations, experiments making snow in a jar, and discoveries about animal habitats. We'll also dive into ocean explorations and blast off into space with astronaut-inspired activities and investigations. Even our upcoming pumpkin science lab will connect How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? with real-world observations as students measure pumpkins, explore what's inside, and investigate how they grow.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things is watching a story capture a student's imagination. Some students are drawn in by the beautiful illustrations, others can't wait to share what they know, and some surprise me with the questions they ask. I especially love seeing those connections happen later when students recognize something from a book during an activity and excitedly share their discovery.\r\n\r\nOn a personal level, sharing these books with my students brings me so much joy. In a world where so much of what children experience is on a screen, there's something really special about sitting together with a physical book, turning the pages, admiring the illustrations, and sharing a story in person. I hope that along with all the science, geography, and problem-solving skills we're building, I'm also helping our students develop a lifelong love of reading.\r\n\r\nThank you for making these moments possible. Our students have been busy creating, building, investigating, and discovering, and the supplies from this project are helping us bring so many of our ideas to life.\r\n\r\nWe've already put these materials to work in all kinds of ways! We celebrated International Dot Day by creating lion-inspired dot art, headed outside with our new clipboards to investigate the natural world, and tackled engineering challenges using craft sticks. At the beginning of the year, students used beads and pipe cleaners to make friendship bracelets as they got to know their new classmates. More recently, we've been exploring geography with our giant United States floor puzzles, working together to piece together the country and discover new places.\r\n\r\nOne of the things I love most about the Learning Lab is watching students get excited about trying something new. Whether they're figuring out how to make a structure stronger, spotting something interesting during an investigation, or celebrating when their team completes a challenge, they are learning through doing. These materials have given us so many more opportunities for those moments!\r\n\r\nAnd we're just getting started! We have a full year of hands-on learning ahead, including solving mysteries with UV flashlights, investigating our own fingerprints, taking on new engineering challenges with marble runs, and exploring the ocean through experiments and discovery bins. As winter approaches, we'll also be learning about snow, animal habitats, and how animals adapt to their environments.\r\n\r\nWhat makes your support so meaningful is that these aren't supplies for just one lesson. We first worked on what is conductive and what is or isn't conductive. I had my students testing all sorts of things from around my room and some from the lunch room. They had a blast making their own conduction testers, and then testing. It allowed for them to actually get their hands on and tackle these abstract (to them) vocabulary that they had to understand for the next part.\r\n\r\nMy students then built a simple circuit. They saw and problem solved how can we light up this LED so that we know we have completed this circuit. It was amazing watching these partners problem solve all short circuit issues that came up.\r\n\r\nThen finally they designed their first playable instrument. I had them draw out different ideas with their partner before finally having each group settle on design. Once that design was finalized they got their conductive pencils and went to work. Again, some ideas were great and others were short circuiting because of flaws in their design. They tweaked their design twice before creating a song with their design.
