I teach four different classes that will be enjoying these books and the kids have been positively giddy when they hear the news about starting our book study. It's such a luxury to be able to have a class set of books so that every student is able to take ownership and responsibility of their learning. \r\n\r\nAs we have been reading \"Aru Shah and the End of Time,\" students have been learning about the connections to Hindu mythology (which is honestly very new for a lot of us!), what it means to be an imperfect protagonist, and how to utilize features for research, like glossaries, when reading. The students in these classes are often used to literacy coming easy to them, but this book is nuanced, challenging, and humorous. There are a lot of new skills for them to learn and unpack. It's been a great opportunity to discuss our metacognition as readers! \r\n\r\nI have really loved seeing the students carry their books in the hallways as they are choosing to read them during free reading in media or even recess! I have gotten a lot of positive feedback about how much the students are enjoying the book. One of my more subdued fourth graders came into class after the first week of assigned independent reading and said, \"Ok. I think I'm going to really like this book\" - practically a glowing review from him! There has been much conversation about continuing to read the other books in the series after we finish this text, which is super exciting to hear! \r\n\r\nWe are amidst the novel study in one class, on a break from it during track out in another, and just about to start with my final two. What a fun reading adventure and I can't wait to see how the learning pans out. As always, thank you for your commitment to public education and our fabulous learners!
