Since receiving the Storyworks magazines, we've seen a noticeable increase in my 4th graders' excitement and motivation to read. These texts have opened the door to so many rich learning opportunities, and I'd love to share a little about what they've meant for our students.\r\n\r\nWith Storyworks, my students practice reading fluency, strengthen their comprehension, and apply grade-level writing skills. Each issue includes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, allowing us to explore genre features, analyze author's craft, identify text structures, and build vocabulary in ways that feel natural and engaging. The embedded assignments align directly with our standards and often enhance what I'm already teaching, giving students meaningful, standards-based practice with each selection.\r\n\r\nReading time has become one of the most joyful parts of our day. Students read independently, in partners, and in small groups as we dig into the articles together. We annotate, discuss, debate, and write about what we've read. Because the articles are current and relevant to students' lives, they're able to make strong real-world connections—something that has deepened their comprehension and sparked genuine curiosity.\r\n\r\nI've seen students who previously struggled to stay engaged become eager to open each new issue. Several reluctant readers now ask if they can take the magazines home or read ahead, while strong readers enjoy diving into deeper questions and extended writing prompts. The variety of genres ensures that every student finds something that resonates with them.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has brought high-interest, meaningful reading materials into our classroom, and it has truly made a difference. They were eager to touch, explore, and dive right in. One student said, \"This is like a new adventure!\" It was heartwarming to see how quickly these resources inspired imaginative play and deeper engagement.\r\n\r\nWe've already used the materials during a sensory exploration unit. For example, using the manipulatives and fine motor tools, students created their own \"Feelings Gardens,\" using texture-rich materials to show how different emotions feel. A student who typically has a hard time expressing himself used soft materials to represent \"calm\" and crinkly paper for \"frustrated.\" It opened up new doors for communication and social-emotional development.\r\n\r\nThese tools are now a staple in our daily centers—from calming bins that support self-regulation to building blocks that foster teamwork and creativity. Students are not only learning academic concepts, but also practicing essential skills like turn-taking, problem-solving, and self-expression.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're planning a mini \"Discovery Fair\" where students will create their own sensory stations to share with peers from other classrooms. It's incredible to see their confidence grow as they take ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping us build a classroom where every student can play, create, and thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1746785266774,"projectUrl":"project/play-create-explore-hands-on-tools-fo/9212848/","projectTitle":"Play, Create, Explore: Hands-On Tools for Learning and Growth","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taylor","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9240413_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1706493378975","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9240413"},{"teacherId":9240413,"projectId":9080082,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom with the sensory swing and roller! These tools have already made a powerful impact on our students' daily routines. One student who often has difficulty during transitions now independently asks for swing time to help calm his body before circle time—something we hadn't seen before!\r\n\r\nWe use the swing and roller as part of our sensory regulation strategies throughout the day. Whether it's before a group activity or to support a student who needs a break, these tools are helping our students access learning with more focus and confidence. The roller has also become a favorite, providing deep pressure input that helps students return to learning feeling more grounded.\r\n\r\nNext, we're working on helping students build their communication around sensory needs. We're teaching them to use gestures, pictures, or words to request the swing or roller during times of dysregulation. My students were wide-eyed with curiosity as we unpacked building sets, fine motor tools, and pretend play items. Many of them dove right in—stacking, sorting, hammering, and pretending with purpose and joy. For some of my students, especially those who are nonverbal or have developmental delays, these materials became meaningful tools for expression and interaction.\r\n\r\nWe've integrated the playsets into our daily learning centers, and they've had a powerful impact on engagement and skill development. One favorite moment was during our \"construction\" unit—students used foam bricks, toy tools, and hard hats to build a pretend house together. With modeling and encouragement, even our most hesitant learners began to collaborate, share tools, and talk through their plans. These materials are supporting language growth, turn-taking, and motor skills in a way that feels like play, not work.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our current theme on community helpers, students are using the playsets to act out jobs like builder, chef, or doctor. This kind of dramatic play deepens comprehension and supports vocabulary building in an accessible, sensory-rich way.
