Prior to this project, we only had one set of sticks - the performance sticks which are wrapped in glow-in-the-dark tape (for performing in the black lights). When these sticks hit the edge of the buckets, the tape starts to come off. In the past, I gave students other sticks for rehearsals, but the sticks did not match the length, weight, or feel of the performance sticks.\r\n\r\nNow, our Junk Jammers have a set of practice sticks which are identical to the performance sticks with one exception - they are not covered with glow-in-the-dark tape. It has been extremely helpful for the students to use these sticks throughout their rehearsals. The transition to our glow-in-the-dark sticks will be seamless when our Junk Jammers perform next week. It is so brightly colored and inviting. All the kids want to play it! In fact, I make sure that every kid in each class gets a chance to rotate to our new drum. So far, the second and third graders have all played it. The fourth and fifth graders will get to use it in a few weeks!\r\n\r\nThe drum is really of superior quality. It is built of solid construction, and it will last us for many years to come! We now have two of these drums, and we hope to add more in the future. It is absolutely perfect! My old school had drums like these, but the manufacturer has improved the design. The drum we purchased through Donors Choose has a stable, sturdy base that should withstand use by children. We will have this drum for many years to come!\r\n\r\nSo far, I have used the drum with my students with special needs. It is easy for the students to play, and they love it! Our PTO is buying additional drums as well. By August, I hope to have enough drums to engage a large group of students simultaneously. I will use the drums with all students in grades 2-5, as well as my students with special needs who attend music in their separate setting class.\r\n\r\nThank you, donors, for your ongoing support of our music program.
