Our band has been without drums for about 3 years, so having a complete rhythm section has amplified the energy in our band room. \r\n\r\nWhen the delivery came, the students were cheering in the halls and celebrating, their faces lit up with joy and couldn't wait to unbox them.\r\n\r\nThis project was especially meaningful to the students because our school is a STEM-focused environment where STEM receives most of the attention and funding and students in the arts department tend to feel overlooked and under-served when they see where the resources go. \r\n\r\nYour support is incredibly meaningful and showed my students that there are people out there who value their creative talents and are willing to invest in our music program. They feel seen, supported, and valued. \r\n\r\nWe are working to build school spirit and finding meaningful ways to celebrate their achievements outside of traditional academic subjects. Your generosity has given our technology classroom micro—small, programmable computers that connect coding on a screen to something students can hold and interact with.\r\n\r\nThese tools give students opportunities to practice sequencing, problem-solving, and creativity. Students can write instructions, test what happens, and make changes when something does not work as expected. This process helps them understand that mistakes are part of learning and that solving a problem often takes more than one try.\r\n\r\nOne exciting part of using micro is seeing how code can control lights and respond to buttons or movement. During their time creating and coding, students were especially excited to learn to code the light turning on and off. These experiences help make abstract coding concepts concrete and meaningful for young learners.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was seeing students who find school challenging, excel in programming. The kids have absolutely loved to see all the different colors they could use in their projects. They were thrilled to have yarn that has multiple colors rather than just one color. The multiple colored ones were the yarn to run out first, since they were so popular. \r\nWith all the donations, the students were able to work on a new project, making dreamcatchers and learning how to weave. Weaving has been a wonderful project for students that don't like to draw. The students get a different way to create art, and tons thrive in weaving rather than traditional drawing. Giving them a choice to pick their different colors and design their weavings/dreamcatchers helps them keep their interest in yarn projects. Many boys in my classes who have not been participating as much during the year with projects that require drawing and coloring, have thrived with weaving. Many have been some of the first to finish the project and show great enthusiasm.\r\nWe will absolutely continue to use this yarn until it runs out in the future. We have already used some yarn for teaching kindergarteners how to weave a basic rainbow. And so far they love it!
