During our first use, the focus was on exploration and safety—students learned how to handle the equipment responsibly while getting a feel for the movement of the wheel and the texture of the clay. Even in this early, experimental stage, there were powerful moments of focus and curiosity. Students who are typically quick to move on from challenges stayed engaged, trying to understand how the clay responded to their hands. It became clear very quickly that this resource invites a different kind of thinking—one that blends creativity with patience and control.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the pottery wheels, the reaction was a mix of excitement and amazement. Many had never seen one in person, and they were eager to try it themselves. That excitement carried into the lesson, but so did some initial frustration as they realized how much coordination it takes. Those moments were valuable—students began to understand that this process takes practice, and they showed a willingness to keep trying and improve.\r\n\r\nAs we look ahead to next year, we're excited to build on this foundation by introducing more specific techniques like centering the clay and controlling wheel speed. With a stronger understanding of expectations and safety already in place, students will be able to dive deeper into the process and begin creating more intentional forms. The goal is to help them develop both skill and confidence over time, giving them the opportunity to take ownership of their work and grow as artists through hands-on experience.","fullyFundedDate":1765164937507,"projectUrl":"project/spinning-minds-sel-on-the-pottery-wheel/9760928/","projectTitle":"Spinning Minds: SEL on the Pottery Wheel","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Antonic","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10281681_orig.jpg?crop=2076,2076,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758823495704","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10281681"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134444","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":null,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":46,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":false,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":84.6,"schoolId":134444,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about TMSA Charlotte Elementary School - Concord on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":" TMSA Charlotte Elementary School - Concord","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/north-carolina-department-of-education/tmsa-charlotte-elementary-school-concord/134444"}
