They help build character, empathy, and self-awareness. With these new books, I've been able to design SEL lessons that spark meaningful conversations about managing emotions, understanding others, and making responsible decisions. As we read together, students are learning how to recognize feelings in themselves and the characters, reflect on tough choices, and talk through conflict in healthy ways. For many of them, it's the first time they've seen themselves or their challenges reflected in a story.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is interactive and reflective. Students gather in small circles, journal their reactions, and share personal connections aloud. One student who's often withdrawn has started opening up during our book discussions, especially after reading about a character who also struggles with feeling invisible. Another student used a scene from a story to explain how they handled an argument at home differently because of a strategy we talked about in class. These moments show that the books are doing what I'd hoped. They're not just being read. They're being felt, understood, and used as tools for growth.\r\n\r\nYour support gave my students more than just books. It gave them mirrors, windows, and doors into a better understanding of themselves and others. Thank you for being part of that journey.","fullyFundedDate":1644760562793,"projectUrl":"project/culturally-competent-classroom/6179113/","projectTitle":"Culturally Competent Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Blackwell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7962052_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y304&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1643860306795","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7962052"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_121223","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":629,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":87,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"28.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":51.8,"schoolId":121223,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Movement School - Freedom on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Movement School - Freedom","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/north-carolina-department-of-education/movement-school/121223"}
