My middle school students love graphic novels, and the picture content really adds a lot to the comprehension of text for some students. Graphic novels are a phenomenal tool to encourage students who are not yet fans of reading longer texts because of the splashy appeal, and before students know it, they have read a stack of books! Success is a great motivator, and many students grow from early graphic novel days into avid readers.\r\nSome of the graphic novels you purchased were higher level--for instance, the March Series by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell discusses the Civil Rights Movement. Many of these books deal with topics that can be intimidating for students, and the books help students educate themselves about history and marginalized communities through the aid of art and dialogue. Often, reading about one historical event or one person spurs interests that prompt students to explore more deeply.","fullyFundedDate":1758799188697,"projectUrl":"project/historical-fiction-in-graphic-novels/9745377/","projectTitle":"Historical Fiction in Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. V.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6722135_orig.jpg?crop=1544,1544,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1566178667244","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6722135"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25963","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":129,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":80,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"9.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":57.1,"schoolId":25963,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Williams Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Williams Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/north-carolina-department-of-education/crossnore-academy/25963"}
