My students are in love with the idea of sewing little stuffed animals and toys for young children in hospitals and shelters. We will use online patterns to trace and cut the fabric, practice hand-stitching and following directions with needle and thread, and learn the mechanics of good side to good side simple sewing techniques. The polyfil will be used to stuff the animal shapes and toys. If we have leftover supplies, I foresee Christmas ornaments that might raise money for our middle school's Adopt-A-Family and possibly tooth fairy pillows for the younger grades or homeless shelter. While supporting their loving natures, this activity will also reinforce reading, measuring, following instructions, small motor skills, and spatial relations. The main learning outcome will be the realization of the gift that comes from giving. Other anticipated outcomes are empowerment to follow through on ideas and confidence from making finished products.
