As a young first year teacher, I don't have the financial means to support my students as much as I would like so your donation means the world to me. Teaching sixth graders, I have learned that anything hands-on will help them be engaged in the topic of conversation while also learning the topic correctly. We are fixing to begin our Unit on Geometry which is perfect timing for your donation to get my project supported!\r\n\r\nWith the manipulatives provided, I will be able to engage students in the topic of geometry by giving them visual ideas on different shapes we will discuss. Our main topic of conversation for our donations will be Surface Area and Volume so students can visualize the 3-dimensional shape and understand the difference between these two concepts. Many students struggle with the idea of surface area only covering the surface where as volume discusses how much it holds. With the manipulatives given, I will be able to wrap the different shapes to demonstrate surface area and fill the shapes with water to represent volume. This will help students understand how the formulas connect to each topic so they are truly grasping the knowledge, not just memorizing. \r\n\r\nAgain, I can't thank you enough for supporting my students. They are my whole world and I want to provide them opportunities that they can use for many years to come. My goal is to have all my students leaving my classroom with at least one thing they learned mathematically but also, with one thing they learned about how to be respectful while still being creative and vocalizing their ideas!","fullyFundedDate":1774022088802,"projectUrl":"project/manipulatives-and-fidgets-for-sixth-grad/9931050/","projectTitle":"Manipulatives and Fidgets for Sixth Grade Mathematicians","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Holloman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9929048_orig.jpg?crop=2959,2959,x112,y235&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740343038565","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9929048"},{"teacherId":8655044,"projectId":9821527,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom is more engaging and interactive. Recently, they used colored pencils to create detailed diagrams of plant and animal cells, and many said it made the lesson more fun and hands-on.\r\nThe digital classroom clock has helped students manage time independently during lab rotations and class activities. The bulletin board décor and positive messages immediately caught their attention and motivated them to do their best work.\r\nNext, we plan to use these materials for lessons on cells and ecosystems. Students will create colorful diagrams and visual models to display on our bulletin boards. Laminated task cards, diagrams, and review activities can be written on and erased, giving students more opportunities to practice, revise their thinking, and build confidence without fear of making permanent mistakes.\r\nStudents are especially excited about how interactive these materials are. Using dry-erase markers makes lessons feel more engaging and less like traditional worksheets. Many students are more willing to take academic risks, collaborate with peers, and stay actively involved in their learning. The durability of laminated materials also helps students feel responsible for and proud of the tools they use in class.\r\nThis resource has been especially helpful for students who benefit from structure, repetition, and visual supports. Laminated reference sheets and step-by-step guides help students work more independently and stay organized. English language learners and students who struggle with confidence have shown increased engagement because they can practice and correct their work easily.\r\nOverall, this project has helped create a more inclusive, flexible learning environment where all students can participate and succeed. It was very interesting to simulate written communication without having paper, pencil/pen, or device. My students enjoyed experiencing the feel of clay as they fashioned modeling clay into tablets on which to write. The act of carving symbols into the clay was more challenging than they thought it would be.\r\n\r\nEveryone in my classroom was actively engaged in this unit throughout the experience. I use them to give students quick brain breaks during long stretches of learning, and the shift in energy is incredible. They love the opportunity to choose their own color marker and get their own eraser with a whiteboard. \r\n\r\nIn the stations activity, they are so excited to go to the \"Boarding Station\" because at this station, they get to show their work through their whiteboard. They can then take a picture of their whiteboard or copy their work/solution to a piece of paper for submission. Not only are they able to work independently but they are able to work collaboratively in their small group. They love to work with a partner where one of them has the plain side showing on their whiteboard and the other has the graph showing so they are able to work together to correctly solve and graph the given inequality problems. I have noticed this has increased their engagement and ability to work together to solve problems which was something we were struggling with as a class. \r\n\r\nMy students and I are so thankful for this funding and can't wait to use the materials even more with my students. I try to create an activity involving the whiteboards at least twice a week but many times, students use the whiteboards to work on the problems on their own which is great!
