Your support has had a profound impact on our students—some of whom are refugees from Syria, Sudan, and Haiti—by enhancing both their educational experience and their personal growth during a pivotal time in their lives.\r\n\r\nOur classroom is a safe and welcoming space for students who have experienced unimaginable challenges: displacement, interrupted education, and the emotional toll of starting over in a new country. Many of them arrived speaking little to no English and are navigating a new culture while trying to catch up academically. For these learners, gaining proficiency in English is more than just academic—it's essential for rebuilding their confidence, forming connections, and creating a sense of belonging in a new home.\r\n\r\nYour donation of headsets has significantly accelerated this process. The clarity, comfort, and durability of these headsets allow students to fully engage in language-learning programs and digital lessons without distraction. But most impactful of all is the ability for students to record and listen to their own voices—something that has changed the way they learn, reflect, and grow.\r\n\r\nHearing themselves speak in English gives students a chance to notice pronunciation patterns, self-correct, and witness their own progress over time. For students from non-literate or low-literacy backgrounds, this audio-based feedback loop is a crucial stepping stone toward confident communication. I've watched students light up with pride as they realize they sound clearer, more fluent, and more assured over time.\r\n\r\nAs their teacher, I now have access to these recordings as well, which allows me to assess their speaking skills more thoroughly and provide individualized, constructive feedback tailored to each student's needs. I can track improvements in fluency, vocabulary use, and pronunciation in ways that traditional assessments simply don't capture. \r\n\r\nThe headsets that you donated record crisp and high fidelity audio in a way that the few provided by the school system do not. This has helped me design more effective instruction and support every learner's journey with intention and care. I have been able to work with them on their individual needs which can vary from student to student. Hearing their recordings over time also allows me to reflect on learning goals and to provide supplemental activities to help my students in an individualized manner. \r\n\r\nI have seen real growth among my English Language Learners this year. Your generous gift has helped to facilitate that growth. Thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1736378909610,"projectUrl":"project/super-speakers-project/8855249/","projectTitle":"Super Speakers Project!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Butler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9790463_orig.jpg?crop=648,648,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727964754176","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9790463"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2853","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":375,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":56,"percentWhite":10,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":78.9,"schoolId":2853,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Welborn Academy Science & Technology on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Welborn Academy Science & Technology","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/guilford-county-schools/welborn-academy-science-tech/2853"}
