As part of our \"Happiness in the Midst of Hardships: From Spirituals to Hip-Hop\" Black History presentation, I composed an original piece that allowed students to engage with this unique percussive art form. By using water as an instrument, they connected with an African musical tradition that exemplifies creativity and resilience, deepening their understanding of music's role in cultural expression. \r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was undeniable. Some were immediately drawn to the water drums, eagerly experimenting with the sounds they could create. Now, several students are so captivated by the experience that they only want to play the water drums when they come to music class. Moving forward, we are focusing on refining their technique, helping them understand how surface tension and velocity impact the three distinct tones required for the rhythm. This hands-on exploration not only enhances their musical skills but also strengthens their grasp of scientific concepts, blending music and physics in an engaging and meaningful way.","fullyFundedDate":1733768166138,"projectUrl":"project/rhythms-of-africa-making-water-drums-a/8994505/","projectTitle":"\"Rhythms of Africa: Making Water Drums and Cultural Connections\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Draughn Jr.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8960753_orig.jpg?crop=3000,3000,x493,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680108338790","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/larrydraughnmus-education"},{"teacherId":1636513,"projectId":8951486,"letterContent":"Your donations are making a difference, our students are learning and growing!
