We started a small garden last year and from there we have learned so many things. My students would come into science excited to talk about plants and would beg to go outside to view the progress of the garden. The garden was and will continue to be used as a tool to help teach my students the needs of plants, the parts of plants, and as well as an active lesson for how plants grow.
The hose reel will help make watering the garden much easier as we will be able to roll the hose where needed and store the hose safely. We have previously been lugging around the hose by hand from storage to the water source. With the hose reel, we can still store the hose safely, but the task of watering the garden will become less tedious.
As for the compost bins, those will be very useful not only for the garden, but also to teach the students about decomposition and the nutrients that come from that. The compost that we create can be used to fertilize our garden and help our plants become healthier. Since we will be staring over fresh and new with the garden in the spring, the compost is vital for preparing the soil for the plants.
Our students, not just my class but the school as a whole, has enjoyed having the garden and being able to learn from it.
