Your generosity provided our students with high-quality, practical tools, including our Carolina Biological gardening tool set, heavy-duty Gorilla dump cart, stirrup hoes, landscape staples, and latex-grip gardening gloves, giving them the exact resources they need to get to work in our school courtyard. \r\n\r\nYour support has made all the difference in making this project a success! \r\n\r\nMy students are energetic, hands-on learners who thrive when given opportunities to learn through physical movement, collaborative teamwork, and tangible, real-world tasks. Our school courtyard has become our living vocational and life-skills lab.\r\n\r\nWe recently completed a hands-on pathway and ground-preparation project along the courtyard borders. Using the stirrup garden hoes and cultivator tools, students worked together to clear creeping weeds, loosen compacted soil, and level the edges along the gravel trail. Students used the HongWay landscape staples to pin down ground fabric and secure border materials, directly practicing spatial reasoning, measurement, and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nA standout moment came while using our new Gorilla dump cart (not pictured). Hauling loads of cleared debris and soil across the lawn required real communication: two students navigated the cart while others coordinated loading and dumping using the quick-release lever. One student, who often feels overwhelmed by traditional lecture-style assignments, beamed after dumping a full load and said, \"Look how much we cleared; we actually made a big dent in this courtyard today!\" The tools have allowed students to practice multi-step directions, fine-motor coordination, and tool safety in an environment where they can see immediate results from their hard work.\r\n\r\nYour investment did more than supply physical equipment; it showed our students that their hard work matters and that people believe in their potential!","fullyFundedDate":1787585410896,"projectUrl":"project/roots-of-growth-initiative/10342485/","projectTitle":"Roots of Growth Initiative","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Acuff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9431625_orig.jpg?crop=1080,1080,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1789956568948","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9431625"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2527","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":788,"numTeachers":58,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":52,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":2527,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Shelby High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Shelby High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/cleveland-county-school-district/shelby-high-school/2527"}
