For fourth graders, these stories provide a safe mirror to examine their own struggles with organization, emotional regulation, and focus.\r\nPicture books act as a bridge between a child's internal experience and the external expectations of our classroom. Here is how they specifically impact student development:\r\n1. Externalizing the Struggle\r\nMany students feel \"broken\" or \"lazy\" when they can't stay organized. Characters in EF-focused books (like those dealing with \"brain fog\" or \"tornado energy\") help students realize that executive dysfunction is a hurdle, not a character flaw. \r\n2. Modeling Metacognition\r\nEffective picture books \"think out loud.\" They demonstrate the internal dialogue needed to:\r\nPrioritize tasks: Deciding what to do first.\r\nInhibit impulses: Stopping a reaction before it happens.\r\nShift focus: Moving from one activity to another without a meltdown.\r\nThanks to you, we have the picture books in our classroom to help our students normalize these skills.","fullyFundedDate":1764631317240,"projectUrl":"project/executive-functioning-fun-for-fourth-gra/9919475/","projectTitle":"Executive Functioning Fun for Fourth Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stokes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp153601_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1535899289861","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/amystokes"},{"teacherId":153601,"projectId":9727846,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the new novels you gave our fourth-grade class! We were able to make so many connections to previous texts that we have already read this year. There is a beautiful relationship cultivated between Charlie and a stray dog, highlighting the theme of animal companionship in children's books. We also examined Charlie's great friendship in her neighbor, Howard, who is able to teach her a lot about life with his simple but loving family.\r\n\r\nCharlie learns that what she frequently wishes for may not be what she really needs.
