More than 50% of my students are reading below grade level by 4 or more grades. Many of them have struggled in the larger high schools in our district, and their reading levels are a primary factor in their academic struggles. \r\n\r\nTo best support my students, I work very hard to help them find success in my classroom. There are several strategies I used to support my struggling readers. First, I read everything we do out loud and have students follow along in their books. I invite students to help read during class, but never force them. By teaching this way, everyone can participate. It is always striking when a student who struggles with reading can actively participate in our class discussion. In fact, it is often the struggling readers who have the deepest insights about what we are reading. In addition, as the year goes on, more students volunteer to read, which always makes my heart melt. :)\r\n\r\nBecause of your wonderful donations, we are more easily able to read along together. I work in the alternative high school in our district. Our students come to us after having trouble with truancy, bullying, anxiety and mental health, and other behavioral issues; we are their second chance at an education. By donating books to my classroom, you are supporting these students as they strive to overcome their personal struggles.\r\n\r\nAs a result of the past experiences of our students, many students come into my classroom academically behind. In my high school classroom, I have run across several students who were reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. This can make instruction very difficult when trying to balance the needs of students whose reading levels vary from 2nd or 3rd grade all the way to 12th grade. The books you have helped fund help support students both at lower reading levels and reflect a wider range of global perspective. The students have directly benefited because having these additional books and graphic novels in our book collection allowed me to pick materials that best suit the students and their needs, academic, social, and emotional. \r\n\r\nI am so grateful for your generous support of my classroom and my students.
