We were able to spend a day with our reading partners giving them their designer dolls along with a book. Each 8th grader wrote a message to their Kinder partner in the book. This project has become a core memory for most students indefinitely. \r\nDuring this three week project I saw students fully engage and concentrate on creating the doll that the Kinder designed. Eighth graders learned 3 sewing stitches, how to sew on a button, and two ways to hem the edges. They were given liberty to apply this knowledge on any details to make their doll look exactly like the Kinder drawing. A number of students who had complicated designs decided to take their materials home to continue drawing their plan, cutting out their images, and sewing the cutest details to the dolls. Not only were the kindergartners impressed with the dolls, the teachers at each school requested that we do this project again next year. \r\nMany of my 8th graders were so nervous prior to meeting their partner, wondering about the criticism that may come. However, the bus ride home was filled with exciting stories about personalities, connections, hugs, and thanks given from the Kindergartners to the 8th graders. Not only did the 8th graders gain self-esteem, confidence, and a desire to continue finding ways to uplift others in the learning community, but Kinder parents have reached out to me stating, \"My child came home and immediately pulled out the plushie and the book, asking to be read to. He has slept with his doll every night since.\"\r\nThis experience grew us as students, young men and women and future mentors. We were able to bond and represent our student body with pride and dedication as a whole. We will continue this tradition in serving our school community and giving back to that in which we have taken, as quoted by Tavis Smiley.
