My students — who had spent months asking \"can we actually try that?\" — finally got to say yes. We dove straight into the Chemical Properties Lab Kit, and watching them test solubility and observe physical versus chemical changes firsthand was something I will not forget. One student who rarely speaks up in class called her lab partner over excitedly because her solution was behaving differently than expected — and suddenly half the class was gathered around her table, troubleshooting together. That moment of student-led discovery is exactly what I had hoped these materials would unlock.\r\n\r\nThe reaction to the Flame Test Kit was nothing short of magical. When students held the wire loops over the flame and saw brilliant flashes of red, orange, and violet light, the room erupted. These are kids who had only ever read about electron energy levels in a textbook, and now they were watching electrons return to their ground state in real color. Several students immediately connected it to the colored lights they see in signs and streetlamps in their neighborhoods — making that leap entirely on their own. For students who sometimes struggle to see themselves as scientists, that kind of \"I figured that out\" moment is transformative.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are just beginning our unit on Mendelian genetics, and the Super Taster Test Genetics Kit is perfectly timed. Students are starting to explore dominant and recessive traits, how genetic variations are passed down, and why two people can experience the world so differently based on their DNA. The idea that they will soon be able to test their own genetic responses to taste compounds has already sparked great conversation — several students have been asking whether being a \"super taster\" is dominant or recessive before we have even gotten there yet! This kit will bridge our biology and chemistry work in a way that no textbook exercise could, making genetics feel personal and real. For many of my students, school is their primary window into scientific exploration — and because of your generosity, that window is wide open. Thank you for investing in their curiosity and their future.","fullyFundedDate":1746584812423,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-chemistry-bringing-real-lab-ex/9308007/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Chemistry: Bringing Real Lab Experiences to Our Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9555939_orig.jpg?crop=981,981,x0,y45&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1716560568921","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9555939"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_121344","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":172,"numTeachers":8,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":75,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":72.7,"schoolId":121344,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Alexander Early College on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Alexander Early College","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/alexander-county-school-district/alexander-early-college-high-school/121344"}
