Over the past two years, these goggles and aprons have become essential tools for our third and fifth-grade young scientists. Having real protective gear makes the students feel like professional researchers every time we step into the lab. They have worn them during countless hands-on experiments, from mixing safe chemical solutions to dissecting owl pellets.The gear has certainly given us some unforgettable, and humorously challenging, moments in the classroom. The foam padding on the goggles happens to leave bright pink and blue dye marks on the children's faces after a long lab session. This unexpected feature led to a few surprised looks at pickup and some very interesting, delicate conversations with parents explaining why their children came home looking like colorful pandas.Despite the temporary body art, these materials have fundamentally transformed how our students experience science. The aprons and goggles have taught them the vital importance of lab safety while allowing them to dive headfirst into messy, exciting discoveries.
