We use the wooden play sets daily in our investigation bags and during center time. One special moment stood out when a student who is typically nonverbal used the sandwich set to \"build\" and then pointed, gestured, and vocalized to request more pieces. That interaction turned into a shared conversation with peers — a powerful step in communication.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were immediately drawn to them. Their faces lit up with excitement as they explored each piece, sorted items, and began pretending to cook, serve, and share. The durability and realistic design invited even our most hesitant learners to engage.\r\n\r\nNext, we are expanding this work by using the materials to support storytelling, sequencing, and social play routines. Students are beginning to create simple narratives, act out daily experiences, and build connections with one another. Your support has given them tools not just to play — but to express themselves, be understood, and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1769368827686,"projectUrl":"project/talking-through-touch-language-explorat/10023874/","projectTitle":"Talking Through Touch: Language Exploration With Wooden Play Pieces","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Medley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4743436_orig.jpg?crop=958,958,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1596346815808","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4743436"},{"teacherId":4743436,"projectId":10023478,"letterContent":"When my students first saw the snacks, they were immediately excited and eager to explore the choices. For many of them, having access to familiar, sensory-friendly foods like yogurt, applesauce, and breakfast bars made a big difference. Instead of avoiding meals or going hungry, they were able to choose items that felt safe and comfortable for them to eat. That sense of choice was powerful—it gave students independence and reduced anxiety around eating during the school day.\r\n\r\nThis project has truly improved our classroom by ensuring that all students have access to food they will actually eat. My students now use these snacks during breakfast and throughout the day when they need extra support. For those who are unable to bring snacks from home, this has been especially meaningful. They no longer have to sit hungry or feel left out, and instead can stay focused, regulated, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my classroom is a more supportive and inclusive environment where students' needs are understood and respected.
