In September, our 5th grade students will return with anxieties for only 2 days a week, and every minute will be crucial. Comfy pillows will allow for areas in the classroom for students to calm their nerves and prepare themselves for learning. When students are upset or agitated they will have more spaces in the class to calm themselves, and will not need to leave the classroom to regulate their emotions.
Students may have to spend the whole day in the same classroom, but with flexible seating they will not need to be in the same seat all day. Students with ADD/ ADHD will use wobble chairs to get out their wiggles in a manner that doesn't disrupt learning. The FlexSpace gives students different spaces in the classroom for small group instruction, independent work, and collaboration.
The hybrid learning model is new and therefore creates new needs. The book bins and book bin storage will be used to hold students' materials in because students will have to share their desks with other students. New desks will replace old desks that are falling apart. The new desktops will be used as whiteboards to reduce time retrieving materials and increase engagement. Although this school year will be much different, I know that students can feel comfortable in our welcoming learning space.
