I have a caseload of 20 elementary-aged students with special needs. Their diagnoses include autism, Down syndrome, learning disabilities, etc. My job is to provide therapy services and to also provide support to their classrooms to help them function throughout the school day. About 90% of the students on my caseloads are non-verbal and are unable to communicate their wants, needs, and feelings. These challenges often present extreme behaviors and unwillingness to participate in classroom activities. \r\n\r\nThe past two years, I was only allotted $90 by my employer to purchase materials. This is where the platform Donors Choose bridged the gap. The organization made it possible for me to give my students calming sensory tools without having to use my own money. The resources given by Donors Choose has been a great addition to our therapy room and classrooms! The students started using them right away and we couldn't be more pleased with how they have calmed our students down in times of crisis. The snacks were helpful for students who were hungry during the day which is good for some students who have erratic eating habits.
