While the goal of the project is still in progress (we are collecting data across an entire year), the students have learned so much about the different birds in our ecosystem, and they have also learned essential life skills and collaboration techniques, which was an unexpected but delightful outcome. \r\n\r\nStudents have yes-named all of the birds- which has been a very funny and creative experience. Some have made \"hello, my name is...\" face cards for the birds with their names and picture so that visiting teachers and students can address the birds \"correctly.\" They love observing which birds visit in the morning vs afternoon, who travels with a partner or mate, different colorations of different bird genders for the same species, which birds sing, which ones are bullies to other birds when it comes to food, the list goes on. Our favorite bird, an oriole we named Banana, has since migrated for the winter months. He had a morning routine where he would come by and aggressively peck at the glass at students, demanding his orange for the day. Students set up their own system to make sure Banana got his orange every day. You can imagine their devastation when he left for winter. \r\n\r\nStudents also came up with their own system of being able to take turns feeding the birds and refilling or cleaning out the feeders- they all wanted to be involved. This was a beautiful milestone to witness them coming together as a community to take care of \"their\" birds. \r\n\r\nThis project has become such an impactful highlight in the past few months, and I am even more excited to see how students react to and represent our long-term data findings when the birds return in the spring. Thank you so much for making this experience possible for them.","fullyFundedDate":1746740951905,"projectUrl":"project/local-bird-biodiversity/9235581/","projectTitle":"Local Bird Biodiversity","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Conover","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9932579_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744041657651","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9932579"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_23581","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":389,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":66,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":70.7,"schoolId":23581,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Newark Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Newark Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/newark-central-schools/newark-middle-school/23581"}
