These headphones are more than classroom supplies; they are essential learning tools that help remove barriers, increase student engagement, and create a more equitable and inclusive educational environment.\r\n\r\nAs a high school special education and literacy teacher, I work with students who have a wide range of academic abilities, learning styles, and instructional needs. Many of my students require targeted interventions to strengthen foundational reading skills, including phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Thanks to the generosity of our DonorsChoose supporters, students now have access to headphones that allow them to engage more effectively with individualized digital learning programs, including Lexia PowerUp Literacy.\r\n\r\nOne of the most significant impacts of this project is the ability to provide students with personalized literacy instruction within the general education classroom. Lexia PowerUp adapts instruction to each student's individual strengths and areas of need, providing targeted lessons and immediate feedback. Headphones are essential to this process because students must be able to hear instructional explanations, listen to modeled reading, identify sounds, and respond to interactive activities without distractions.\r\n\r\nBefore having access to sufficient headphones, implementing individualized digital instruction could be challenging. Students working on different lessons simultaneously could create competing sounds and distractions, making it difficult for everyone to concentrate. The headphones help create a more focused learning environment where students can work independently at their own pace while remaining part of the larger classroom community.\r\n\r\nThis project is particularly important for students with disabilities and those who struggle with reading. Many high school students who need foundational literacy intervention are sensitive about receiving additional academic support, especially when their reading skills are significantly below grade level. The headphones allow students to receive instruction that meets their individual needs without drawing unnecessary attention to their learning challenges. This promotes dignity, confidence, and a sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nAnother important benefit is the increased opportunity for student independence and ownership of learning. With headphones, students can listen to directions, replay explanations, access audio-supported texts, and complete instructional activities with greater autonomy. Rather than relying exclusively on teacher assistance, students have additional tools to navigate challenging tasks and practice skills independently. This is especially valuable in an integrated co-teaching classroom, where students with and without disabilities learn alongside one another.\r\n\r\nThe headphones also support differentiated instruction beyond literacy intervention. Students can use them to access text-to-speech technology, listen to audiobooks, review multimedia lessons, and engage with digital assignments. These resources are particularly helpful for students who have difficulty decoding complex texts but are capable of understanding and discussing sophisticated ideas when information is presented through an accessible format.\r\n\r\nEqually important, the project supports our commitment to educational equity. Not every student has access to reliable headphones or technology accessories at home. By providing these materials in the classroom, we help ensure that students have access to the same instructional opportunities regardless of their families' financial circumstances. No student should be prevented from fully participating in a learning activity because they lack a basic educational resource.\r\n\r\nThe impact of Tune Into Learning extends beyond improving access to technology. It supports a classroom culture where students are encouraged to persevere, take academic risks, and recognize their own growth. When students have the tools they need to engage successfully with challenging material, they are better positioned to develop confidence and build the skills necessary for success in high school and beyond.\r\n\r\nAs an educator, I believe that meaningful learning occurs when students feel supported, included, and empowered. This project helps make that vision a reality by allowing me to provide more responsive instruction while supporting students' individual learning needs.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the generous donors who made Tune Into Learning possible. Your support has provided much more than headphones. You have helped create opportunities for students to strengthen their literacy skills, develop independence, and participate more confidently in their education.\r\n\r\nEvery student deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment that recognizes their unique strengths and provides the resources necessary for success. Through your generosity, our students are better equipped to tune out distractions, tune into instruction, and, most importantly, tune into their own potential.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping them discover that their challenges do not define their possibilities.","fullyFundedDate":1775609605736,"projectUrl":"project/help-us-tune-into-learning/9952211/","projectTitle":"Help Us Tune Into Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mignola","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6401521_orig.jpg?crop=565,565,x0,y101&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1686858389469","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6401521"},{"teacherId":6401521,"projectId":9098178,"letterContent":"Thank you again for supporting our Hydroponic Classroom Garden project! I am excited to share how meaningful this experience has been for our students and our classroom community.\r\n\r\nSince setting up the garden, students have been deeply engaged in observing growth patterns, measuring progress, and caring for our plants each day. The garden has become a hands-on learning hub—sparking curiosity about science, sustainability, and healthy foods. Students who are usually quiet have found a sense of pride in tending to the plants, and our classroom has transformed into a greener, calmer, and more inviting space.\r\n\r\nThis project has also given us real-world lessons in problem-solving. We faced challenges such as water pH balance, unexpected wilting, and figuring out proper light and nutrient schedules. Through trial and error, students made hypotheses, tracked changes, and adjusted our setup. Rather than setbacks, these challenges became powerful learning opportunities. The experience taught our class that growth—of both plants and people—takes patience, teamwork, and resilience.\r\n\r\nWe are proud to say that our garden continues to thrive. Students keep asking, \"What should we plant next?\" We plan to expand the project by growing herbs and leafy greens that we can share with our school community.\r\n\r\nYour generosity made this possible. Because of you, our students are learning to nurture living things, apply science skills, and see themselves as environmental stewards. We are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1742063458605,"projectUrl":"project/growing-futures-hydroponic-gardening-fo/9098178/","projectTitle":"Growing Futures: Hydroponic Gardening for Hands-On Learning and Sustainability","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mignola","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6401521_orig.jpg?crop=565,565,x0,y101&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1686858389469","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6401521"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_123718","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":163,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":46,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.1,"schoolId":123718,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about United Charter High School Humanities IV on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"United Charter High School Humanities IV","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-state-department-education/new-visions-charter-high-school-humanities-iv/123718"}
