Right now, there is so much discussion on literacy and how to teach students to read. All of this is important, but what I am hearing less and less about is how to foster the love of reading. This is especially hard with students who have low confidence levels in their reading abilities. Graphic novels are such a great entry point for students. Not only do students find them incredibly enjoyable, but they are also much more accessible for our lower readers. When students struggle with vocabulary words, they look for hints from the graphics. They still have the confidence of holding a novel, as most graphic novels are thicker and look like traditional books. We don't want students to be on graphic novels forever, but they're a wonderful start to building confidence and passion for reading. Your generosity has made such a meaningful difference in my classroom and in the lives of my students. When our package of books arrived, the excitement was immediate—you could see the curiosity and joy light up on my Spanish-speaking students' faces as they eagerly explored the titles written just for them.\r\n\r\nMany of my students are still developing confidence in reading English, and for some, this is their very first year in an English-speaking school. Before your donations, our classroom library had very few books that reflected their language, culture, or experiences. Now, because of your support, our shelves are filled with bilingual and high-interest texts that my students can actually connect to. They can choose books that are written in English and Spanish, making reading not only accessible but enjoyable and empowering.\r\n\r\nWhat makes this even more special is that these books arrived just in time for our Millionaires Challenge—a year-long goal where students aim to read one million words by June.","fullyFundedDate":1746786891197,"projectUrl":"project/library-for-english-language-learners/9057705/","projectTitle":"Library for English Language Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jackson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5700242_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1540516353904","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sher-jackson"},{"teacherId":5700242,"projectId":9235726,"letterContent":"The mental health awareness workshop had a meaningful and lasting impact on my students. Our winter break lasts two weeks, which for adults may seem short, but for kids is a very long time to go without keeping their brains \"warm.\" Because of your donations, I was able to allow each student in my homeroom to take 2-3 books home for break. I challenged them - can you read for 15 minutes each day? Can your parents send me photos of you reading, so I can give you a few points of \"extra credit?\" How does it feel to abandon your phone and look at still images for a while?
