Before this project, students in my classroom struggled to find books they were interested in and connect to the stories within them. There was hardly any engagement in our independent reading time, and students dreaded that part of the day. Now, my students average reading 40-60 pages per independent reading block and are excited to discuss their reading, from opinions on characters and the plot to discussing predictions of what was coming next. These new books have also led my students to really great conversations about mental health, friendship and relationship dynamics, social justice, body image, and other issues that teenagers are often attuned to. \r\n\r\nIt's incredible to see my students fully engaged in their books. Our classroom library isn't just a set of shelves filled with books; it's a place where students discover new ideas, question the world around them, and see themselves reflected in powerful narratives. These books teach students about fairness, equity, and change—they help students feel it, understand it, and maybe even be inspired to make a difference. \r\n\r\nYour donation means more than I can say. You've given my students the gift of knowledge, perspective, and empathy — things that will stay with them long after they turn the last page. Thank you for believing in the power of stories and of my students.","fullyFundedDate":1738608905820,"projectUrl":"project/reflecting-our-readers-help-create-a-mo/9084615/","projectTitle":"Reflecting Our Readers: Help Create a More Diverse Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Phillips","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9596732_orig.png?crop=596,596,x0,y97&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738087926240","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9596732"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_23576","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":429,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":34,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.8,"schoolId":23576,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Elmwood Village Charter School - Days Park on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Elmwood Village Charter School - Days Park","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-state-department-education/elmwood-village-charter-school/23576"}
