Many will ask to take a \"brain break\" in the calm corner, which involves sitting in a cozy chair and exploring a variety of fidgets and calming tools for 2-3 minutes to \"reset\" their bodies and brains before rejoining the group. The Hoberman Square (Google it!) has been a huge hit for learning how to self-regulate with deep breaths. After modeling, the students are eager to try it themselves and lead their peers in calming breaths. My wiggly students enjoy getting to move their bodies while continuing to work at their desks, using the bouncy bands and inflatable seat cushion, which help them to focus. \r\n\r\nThe sensory-rich materials, including the Play-Doh and Bubble Foam, has made fine motor and pre-writing skill development fun and engaging, especially for my sensory seeking students! While some students have yet to warm-up to \"messy\" textures, the way the Bubble Foam slowly grows when squirted onto the table can hardly be resisted by even the most tactile-sensitive kiddos. Many students enjoy learning letter formation by rolling out Play-Doh letters and writing in the foam.\r\n\r\nThe materials mentioned and so many more received as part of this project have allowed me to incorporate sensory strategies and tools into my OT sessions, directly supporting over 25 students with disabilities.
