The classroom instantly turned into an energetic design studio as students examined the proportions and excitedly debated the silhouettes they wanted to create. To channel this energy, we launched the \"Draped Identities\" project, where design teams used fabric swatches and pins to construct non-sewn garments representing a personal narrative. Students stayed organized and accountable by using a \"First-Then\" checklist, pinning their fabric to center anchor points before draping pleats against a 20-minute studio timer.\r\n\r\nThe best moment occurred during a critique with a student who usually struggled to sketch her design ideas on paper. Frustrated by her sketch of a complex, asymmetrical collar, she grabbed a piece of stiff fabric and went straight to her mannequin to manipulate the material by hand. Within minutes, she physically created a stunning architectural collar directly on the dress form.
