Your support has been transformative, bringing a vibrant collection of new books and essential organizational tools directly into our classroom. The joy on my students' faces when they saw the new books was priceless, and the impact of your donation is already evident every single day.\r\n\r\nThe core of your donation was, of course, the new books, and they are doing so much more than just filling shelves—they are actively enriching our literacy instruction. As you know, reading is a complex skill, and these new texts have allowed me to introduce and reinforce a variety of critical literacy skills. For our younger and developing readers, the new, high-interest books and early chapter books are perfect for teaching decoding strategies and building fluency. Students are excited to pick books about topics they love, which provides the authentic motivation needed to practice sounding out words and reading with expression. For students who are ready for more complexity, the diverse range of chapter books and non-fiction titles has become the basis for lessons on inferencing, understanding complex characters, and analyzing text structure. We now have fantastic resources for modeling close reading and demonstrating how authors use language to create meaning. Furthermore, having books that reflect a wide array of cultures, experiences, and perspectives allows us to consistently teach essential comprehension skills like making text-to-self and text-to-world connections, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and global awareness. We're not just reading words; we're learning to think critically about them and the world they describe.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become a more engaging, personalized, and seamless experience thanks to the items you provided. Prior to this project, finding a \"just right\" book for every student was a constant challenge, but the expanded library now ensures that every child, regardless of their reading level, can find a book that excites and challenges them appropriately. Our daily reading time now features a true culture of choice. Students look forward to independent reading, where they can be found nestled in comfortable corners with their new selections. Reading is no longer a silent, isolated activity; it's a dynamic, visible part of our day. The organizational materials, like the paper storage, glue dots, laminating pouches, clear view self-adhesive library pockets, and index card pockets, have been instrumental in this shift. We used the pockets and pouches to create dual-language and visual labels for our library sections, organizing the new books by genre, topic, and reading level. This has transformed our library into an accessible, student-friendly resource center. Students are now completely independent in selecting, checking out, and shelving books. The new books have acted as powerful catalysts, turning passive readers into passionate, engaged learners and helping them see themselves as capable, lifelong readers. Thank you for your belief in our classroom and in the power of a great book. Your thoughtful donation has truly laid the foundation for a vibrant and organized literary life for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1758195868571,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-classroom-library/9714560/","projectTitle":"Building a Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sophia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-sophias-classroom"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_109992","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":299,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":23,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.9,"schoolId":109992,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 340 Sixth Ave Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 340 Sixth Ave Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/sixth-ave-elementary-school/109992"}
