It thrust me into the role of a first-year teacher again for the first time in 20 years. Part of that challenge was rebuilding the lab infrastructure I had for many years. I should have known however that the decision would be so much easier with my Donorschoose community on my side to make the transition easier. The microwave and ice maker you donated are tools I will use for years to come. More immediately though, they facilitated a month and a half of science learning that will extend far beyond my classroom. Students collected, filtered, and copied their DNA, chilling their samples with ice from the machine you donated. The microwave was essential for us to make and pour our own gels so they could visualize their DNA. \r\n\r\n The results from there were equally as stunning. Everyone compared their DNA sequences to one another, and resoundingly a pattern emerged: DNA does not follow the racial divisions we often ascribe to one another. It is a powerful moment when science upends long-held assumptions about how the world works. My students walked away feeling a deep sense of connection with each other. They also are prepared to face down racial injustice with the simple fact that it is a lie made up to give power to some and deny it to others. \r\n\r\n Your donation made this moment possible. Your donations mean we can keep going through the spring and maybe even into next year with the teas, hot cocoa, and coffee you donated. \r\n \r\n\r\n My students commented, \"ooooh, fancy cups,\" when they saw the mugs and mug tree, as well. My tough class, which often induces anxiety before they come in, went really well. I had a hypothesis that they were less able to focus and chattier at this time because they still have an hour to go until lunch. It seemed I was proven right even before they sat down, because one student came in and said \"I'm hungry,\" before even seeing the spread of snacks alongside the do now handouts on the front table. I gave them a few minutes to eat while they had their do now question, and there was more focus, less chatter, and overall more work done. I don't want to declare it a perfect class, because there are still those stragglers who aren't managing their time well yet, but it was progress. It was thanks to you that I was able to even begin to work on this problem - the snacks made a difference. As long as they last, I'm going to keep bringing them out for classes and to entice more students to stay for clubs.
