Now all of our students are able to access cycling education and learn to ride a bicycle for leisure, health, wellness, or transportation. We have been using the adaptive bike weekly during our Learn to Ride class 101 and 201. Students with and without disabilities have learned lessons about accessibility, self-determination, and independence through biking. It has spurred conversations about ensuring that everyone has what they need and that fair isn't always equal.\r\n\r\nAt first, the students using the adaptive bike were a little nervous because it wasn't something they were used to. Then, once boarded and accustomed, they quickly became experts who owned their identity as a cyclist. Students have been able to learn basic riding skills such as starting, stopping, building stamina, using hand signals and verbal signals, and making turns. \r\n\r\nOne student in particular took to the bike with glee and fervor exclaiming in the first class, \"Ms. Emily, where are we going this week?\" She has since shown her skills as an avid cyclist who even rode 2.5 miles in one session! We are now preparing for her first bicycle-based field trip in the Advanced level course. She has learned traffic safety skills, maneuvering and handling skills. \r\n\r\nThis bike will last years, allowing students of all ages and abilities to learn how to cycle. There is nothing like the smile on a child's face when they get to board the adaptive bike, be with their friends, feel the wind in their hair, and know the joy of independence. That is a skill and experience that can never be taken away once gained because, well, it's like learning to ride a bike!","fullyFundedDate":1758908349779,"projectUrl":"project/adaptive-bicycle-allows-all-students-to/9446803/","projectTitle":"Adaptive Bicycle Allows All Students to Bike Brooklyn","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Emily","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3069970_orig.jpg?crop=2844,2844,x0,y161&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1628347016179","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3069970"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134570","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":null,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":false,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":87.2,"schoolId":134570,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 372 The Children's School - 9th St on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 372 The Children's School - 9th St","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-372-the-children-s-school-9th-st/134570"}
