Students who once struggled with traditional tabletop tasks eagerly explored the sensory wall, manipulating latches and buckles while naturally practicing sequencing, describing actions, and using spatial vocabulary. The hands-on materials have helped my students stay regulated and engaged, allowing us to spend more time communicating and less time redirecting. Watching a student expand from single words to full sentences during a restaurant role-play was a powerful reminder of how meaningful, play-based learning supports real growth.\r\n\r\nThe dramatic play sets, mailbox activities, dress-up costumes, and puppets have sparked authentic conversations, storytelling, and collaborative play. Students are practicing turn-taking, asking and answering questions, and using language in real-world contexts with greater confidence. Sensory tools have further supported focus and smoother transitions, helping students remain ready to learn.\r\n\r\nNext, my older students are beginning to create their own role-play scenarios, building independence in conversation, sequencing, and narrative skills. Thanks to your generosity, our therapy room has become an interactive, movement-friendly space where communication feels joyful, empowering, and real.","fullyFundedDate":1765205528956,"projectUrl":"project/the-sensory-communication-corner-hands-/9945228/","projectTitle":"The Sensory Communication Corner: Hands-On, Experiential Learning for Growing Communicators","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Boswell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6820759_orig.jpg?crop=1944,1944,x0,y324&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1568926198948","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-boswellslp"},{"teacherId":6820759,"projectId":9912007,"letterContent":"When the games first arrived, my students' excitement was immediate and heartfelt. As soon as they saw colorful favorites like Candy Land, Hoot Owl Hoot, and Guess Who?, they were eager to sit together and begin playing. For many of my students—who often struggle to initiate interaction—this was a powerful moment. The games naturally drew them toward one another. Instead of prompting them to speak, I saw students independently asking, \"Can I have a turn?\" and \"What do you think?\" For some, it was the first time they comfortably maintained a back-and-forth exchange with a peer without adult support.\r\n\r\nWe now use these resources during structured social skills groups to target turn-taking, perspective-taking, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. During one small-group session, a student who typically becomes frustrated when losing a game was able to pause, take a deep breath, and say, \"Good game,\" to a peer. The group celebrated that moment together. These games have provided safe, low-pressure opportunities to practice flexible thinking and collaboration while building confidence. Students are not just playing—they are learning how to manage feelings, express their thoughts clearly, and repair small social misunderstandings in real time.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students are developing skills that extend far beyond our therapy room. Our next steps include increasing student independence by allowing them to lead portions of the game, create their own conversation questions, and practice these skills within their classrooms. We are also working on helping students generalize these strategies to recess and other unstructured settings. Your support has created meaningful opportunities for connection, and I am already seeing stronger peer relationships, increased self-confidence, and more joyful communication every day. Thank you for helping my students find their voices and build the skills they need to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1764000862500,"projectUrl":"project/self-confidence-through-social-emotional/9912007/","projectTitle":"Self-Confidence Through Social Emotional Learning!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Boswell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6820759_orig.jpg?crop=1944,1944,x0,y324&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1568926198948","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-boswellslp"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_509","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":713,"numTeachers":61,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":83,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":54.6,"schoolId":509,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 195 on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 195","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-195/509"}
