One meaningful moment was when a student independently chose to use the breathing tools and visual calm-down cards instead of reacting in frustration. After a few minutes, the student returned to learning feeling confident and ready to participate.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe students were excited and curious when they first saw the calming corner. They immediately explored the textures, visuals, and tools, asking thoughtful questions about how each item could help them feel calm. Many expressed how happy they were to have a space that helps them feel safe and understood.\r\n\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue learning how to identify their emotions and select appropriate coping strategies independently. We are incorporating the calming corner into social-emotional lessons focused on self-awareness, emotional regulation, and problem-solving. As this is my first year at PS 19, I began the year by surveying students about the units they were most interested in. Pickleball was overwhelmingly popular, and I am thrilled to now have the tools necessary to teach students how to play.\r\n\r\nWe started our first week focusing on ball control and have since progressed to serving and rallying. Students are now learning the rules with the goal of participating in a class-wide tournament and refereeing games independently. The dried up markers are now bright and ready to use. The centers are changed often and saved from damage. \r\nI hope to continue to receive this kind of support for my classroom in the future.
