Because of your kindness and belief in our students, we were able to introduce pedometers into our PE classes, and the impact has been both immediate and meaningful. Your donation has helped transform the way my students view movement, physical activity, and their own health in a way that is engaging, educational, and developmentally appropriate.\r\n\r\nSince introducing pedometers into my PE classroom, students have become much more aware of their movement levels and how active they are during class. Many students had never thought about how much they move in a day, and the pedometers gave them a concrete and exciting way to measure their activity. Students are eager to check their step counts throughout the period, which has increased motivation, engagement, and participation. This simple tool has encouraged students to move with purpose, try new activities, and challenge themselves to be more active during PE.\r\n\r\nAfter receiving the pedometers, I spent time teaching students how to use them properly and explaining why they are an important fitness tool. Students learned that pedometers help track movement and can give us information about how active we are throughout the day. We discussed recommended daily movement goals and learned that a healthy target is approximately 10,000–14,000 steps per day. Students were excited to see how many steps they could accumulate during a single PE class and were surprised by how quickly steps add up when they are actively moving.\r\n\r\nWe also used the pedometers as a learning opportunity to explore how different activities affect step counts. Together, we discussed why high-energy games such as running, fitness circuits, and movement-based challenges result in higher step totals, while activities like bowling, yoga, and skill-based stations naturally produce lower step counts. These discussions helped students understand that while step counts may vary, all movement is valuable and important. Students learned that physical activity comes in many forms and that every activity supports the body in different ways.\r\n\r\nIn addition to tracking movement, we connected pedometer use to health education. Students learned how regular physical activity strengthens muscles and bones, keeps the heart healthy, improves focus and attention, supports better sleep, and increases overall energy levels. By seeing their steps in real time, students were able to make meaningful connections between movement and how their bodies feel. These conversations helped reinforce the idea that being active is not just about numbers, but about taking care of your body and feeling your best.\r\n\r\nTo further engage students and promote teamwork, I created a 500,000-Step Challenge for all K–2 students. Students were divided into six mixed-grade teams, with each team including students from kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Team posters, colors, and rosters were created to build a sense of community and belonging. During designated challenge weeks, students wear their pedometers and work together to earn steps for their team. I collect weekly totals and track each team's progress on a classroom display, which has added excitement, accountability, and friendly competition to our PE program.\r\n\r\nThis challenge will continue throughout the school year, with at least one week each month dedicated to pedometer use. During these weeks, we revisit why pedometers are such a valuable tool for understanding fitness and physical activity levels. Students are incredibly excited each time the pedometers are brought out for a challenge week. They encourage one another, compare step counts, celebrate successes, and cheer on teammates across grade levels. The enthusiasm and extra movement I see during these periods is truly wonderful.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our Physical Education program has become more interactive, goal-oriented, and motivating. The pedometers have helped students take ownership of their health in a fun, meaningful, and age-appropriate way. Most importantly, they have helped students develop lifelong habits and an understanding of why physical activity matters. Your support has made a lasting difference in our classroom, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity you have given our students to grow, move, and learn.","fullyFundedDate":1758898962515,"projectUrl":"project/every-step-counts/9638903/","projectTitle":"Every Step Counts!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Harjus","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10003605_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745940408907","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10003605"},{"teacherId":234850,"projectId":9888782,"letterContent":"STEM materials spark curiosity and hands-on exploration in our classroom. This space has already become our classroom's most popular \"go-to\" reading spot — students curl up with picture books, share stories with partners, and practice foundational early reading skills in a calming environment. The comfort and physical ease allowed more stamina, more focused engagement, and more positive peer interaction.\r\n\r\nThe next steps in our current reading work will be using this corner to support students as we move into expanding reading stamina, discussing characters, and identifying main idea and details.
