My 6th grade students were so excited when they first saw the owl pellet kits. They couldn't wait to get started and were especially excited to find out what they could discover inside each pellet. Students use the kits as part of our ecosystems and food webs unit, where they are learning how organisms depend on one another for energy and resources. During our owl pellet investigation, students carefully dissect their pellets, identify bones, and used what they find to figure out what the owl had eaten. \r\n\r\nThese materials help make our science lessons more hands-on and meaningful for students. Instead of just reading about food webs and predator-prey relationships, students are able to act like real scientists and use evidence from their own investigation. Our next step is for students to use their findings to create and analyze food webs, showing how energy moves from one organism to another. We will continue using hands-on materials like these throughout our science units to help students connect what they learn in class to the real world. The kids were thrilled and grateful to find out that the community had come through and donated to support their fun and creativity.\r\n\r\nThe dice trays and new dice have been a particularly practical addition to the club. Previously, dice were rolling off of desks, falling into the cracks between desks, ending up under my shelves, and creating an all-around nuisance. The trays keep everything a little more controlled and organized.\r\n\r\nIn the last few months, the club members have made plenty of memories and a number of surprising decisions -- selling off a cursed obelisk to the highest bidder, adopting a gingerbread man brought to life by dark magic, and deliberately antagonizing powerful beings, with predictable results.
