I didn't tell the students that were receiving seeds as it was going to be a surprise for them. They had watched me a day earlier set up the hydroponics containers and asked what they were for. I told them that we would be starting a class garden in a few days but didn't give any details. \r\n\r\nFinally, the seeds arrived, and I had one of the students collect the package from the office. They asked what was in the package, so I told them they could open it and find out. The students happily opened the mystery package and discovered the seeds. After debating about what seeds were going to be planted the students settled on tomatoes and cucumbers because they could be readily eaten once ripe. Little did we know what we were getting into, growing plants take a very long time and we started late in the year. \r\nThe seeds were planted at the beginning of May and started growing rapidly, soon the plants got very big, and we quickly realized that both chosen plants were creepers and needed something to climb. Since they were growing we pushed on. In mid-June the plants were thriving, but no vegetables yet. At the end of the school year the students decided to have the plants come home with me over the summer. It was not until mid-July that the plants finally started flowering. Using google to learn how to artificially pollinate the flowers, we finally got 3 cucumbers to grow. \r\nWith what we have learned we will try again this year, planting very early, and hoping for better results.","fullyFundedDate":1746119122754,"projectUrl":"project/lets-grow/9038801/","projectTitle":"Lets Grow!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Mandelbaum","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2327896_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1479221154743","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jmandelbaum"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_110735","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":44.4,"schoolId":110735,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Brooklyn West Learning Center @ Prospect Place on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Brooklyn West Learning Center @ Prospect Place","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/alternate-learning-center-at-prospect-place/110735"}
