Preparing for and taking New York State's English language proficiency test can feel overwhelming for our kindergarten through second grade English Language Learners, so these resources helped create a more positive and encouraging environment for them. We used the snacks as small boosts during testing days and practice sessions, while the squishies became special rewards for students' hard work, perseverance, and positive attitudes throughout the testing process.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement. Many of them immediately started talking about which squishy they hoped to earn and were eager to work hard during practice activities. The snacks also helped students feel more comfortable and cared for during long testing sessions. These simple rewards made a huge difference in helping students feel confident and motivated.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we will continue building our students' English skills through speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities in the classroom. The confidence students gained during NYSESLAT preparation is carrying over into daily lessons, and they are becoming more willing to participate, take risks, and use English with their peers and teachers.
