I first thought of this project while working with students after school, focusing on preparing them for upcoming assessments. I discovered that an area where students needed a lot of support was in understanding and using figurative language, such as similes, metaphors, and idioms, but what I was lacking was fun resources to teach these skills. That is when I created this project!\r\n\r\nHaving a project funded is always fun and exciting, but watching the students open the boxes of books was the absolute best part! I was surprised at their excited reactions and immediate interest in the books. Their interest sparked really interesting conversations even before we dove into the stories! The younger students loved identifying rhyming words in, \"The Wonky Donkey\", while the older students really enjoyed identifying similes in, \"My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks\". They also were very enthusiastic about learning new idioms and being able to learn about the history and backstory of each idiom using, \"Why Do We Say That?\" was great. The increased level of engagement was wonderful to see. \r\n\r\nThis project sparked new interests in students, increased engagement, social interactions, and taught students how interesting books can actually be. It also allowed students to explore their own creativity through drawing and writing tasks. Thank you again for helping to inspire our young learners.
