My students are annotating texts by hand, completing close-reading activities, organizing their work in their own folders, and writing their ideas on paper before moving to a computer. It has been wonderful to see them actually interacting with a text—highlighting important details, writing questions in the margins, and going back to find evidence to support their thinking. The acoustic panels and classroom organization materials are also helping us create a calmer, more organized space for independent reading, writing, and small-group work.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building these habits as we move into more challenging 9th-grade texts and writing assignments. My goal is for students to see how much they grow as readers and writers throughout the year by looking back at the work they have saved in their folders. Something as simple as having a snack- or even two0 made a real difference for students who were trying to get through a long day. It helped them settle in, focus, and feel cared for. Some would even stop by between periods for a quick pick me up. \r\nThe books and materials allowed us to do the kind of learning that can be difficult without the right resources, especially for students with disabilities. Students highlighted wrote in the margins, and worked together to break long passages into smaller, manageable chunks. over time they became more willing to take on challenging text instead of immediately feeling overwhelmed. Because of this, 50% of my 11th graders went on to pass the New York State English Regents Exam, and I am so proud of the persistence they showed. \r\nOur reading also opened space for honest conversations about family, responsibility, and choices we make. Many of my Senior female students especially connected with Berneice from \"The Piano Lesson\". They admired that she was strong, independent, and did not need a man to define who she was. Seeing students recognize these qualities in a character- and reflect on what they meant in their own lives- was incredibly meaningful. \r\nThank you for helping create a classroom where students had what they needed to learn, grow, and feel seen.
