When the boxes arrived, my students were overcome with excitement and curiosity. Watching their eyes light up as we unpacked the weighted stuffed animals, colorful sensory toys, and fresh tubs of Play-Doh was an unforgettable moment. For many of my students with special needs and sensory processing differences, self-regulation can be a daily hurdle, and seeing these brand-new tools dedicated specifically to their comfort made them feel truly seen and supported. \r\n\r\nThese wonderful materials have completely transformed our calm corner into a safe, functional sanctuary. The weighted stuffed animals have quickly become a student favorite, providing the grounding, deep-pressure sensation they need to decompress when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated. Students frequently visit the calm area to squeeze sensory toys or work with Play-Doh to release tension and refocus their energy. Having these tactile options allows them to independently recognize their sensory needs, choose a self-regulation strategy, and reset so they can smoothly transition back into learning.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue integrating these resources into our daily social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons. Our next focus is helping students identify their emotions early using a mood check-in chart and independently selecting the sensory tool that best matches their needs. By pairing these tools with our SEL curriculum, you are giving my students essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom walls. The fine motor manipulative we were able to purchase has helped our students to strengthen their hands and improve their fine motor strength in new and find ways.
