The tablets provided by this project allow students to practice early academic skills like letter recognition, tracing, and listening comprehension at their own pace, while also supporting sensory regulation and focus during structured learning time.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about this new technology is the ability to interact with learning in a hands-on and motivating way. Many of my students are drawn to the visual and auditory feedback the technology provides, which helps maintain attention and reinforces learning through repetition. The predictability and structure of the digital activities make learning feel safe and accessible, especially for students who benefit from routine and clear expectations.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have shown notable growth since using this technology regularly. Students who previously struggled to remain engaged during independent work are now able to complete tasks with increased independence and confidence. The Tonies introduce important skills such as listening comprehension, vocabulary development, sequencing, and understanding story elements like characters and events. For many of our students, hearing stories read aloud with consistent pacing and repetition helps build attention, language, and confidence with books.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks different from a traditional setting, and that is what makes these materials so impactful. Students listen to stories during whole-group instruction, small groups, and independent TEACCH rotations. They follow along using visuals, respond to simple questions through pointing, verbal language, or communication devices, and engage in calming, structured listening time. The hands-on nature of the Tonies allows students to independently access stories, promoting autonomy while still supporting comprehension and engagement.\r\n\r\nSeveral of our students have shown a strong connection to these new books. Some are drawn to placing the Tonie characters on the box and listening repeatedly to favorite stories, while others demonstrate increased attention span and reduced sensory behaviors during listening time. For students who benefit from repetition and predictable routines, the Tonies have become a motivating and comforting part of our literacy block.
