Our project transformed what participation and ownership looked like for multiply disabled students by giving them the tools, materials, and accessible supports needed to design and complete a school mural entirely on their own. The impact extended far beyond the finished artwork.\r\nFor many students with significant physical, cognitive, communication, and sensory challenges, opportunities to contribute to large-scale collaborative projects are often limited or heavily adult-directed. This project changed that dynamic. Students took active roles in planning, creating, and assembling the mural, demonstrating that with the right accommodations and adaptive materials, they could independently contribute meaningful artistic work to a shared community project.\r\n\r\nThe mural fostered:\r\nStudent agency and independence — Students made creative choices, expressed personal ideas, and saw their individual contributions become part of a permanent public display.\r\nCollaboration and communication — Students practiced turn-taking, cooperative problem-solving, and peer interaction while working toward a common goal.\r\nConfidence and self-advocacy — Completing a visible project that belonged entirely to them reinforced students' belief in their own abilities and helped others in the school community recognize their strengths.\r\nInclusion and visibility — The mural became a powerful representation of what students with disabilities can accomplish when provided equitable access and high expectations.\r\nFine motor, sensory, and adaptive skill development — Students engaged in hands-on artistic tasks tailored to their individual abilities, strengthening both functional and expressive skills.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, the project shifted perceptions. Families, staff, and peers witnessed multiply disabled students not as passive participants, but as artists, collaborators, and creators capable of producing something lasting and meaningful for the entire school community. The completed mural now serves as both a source of pride for the students and a daily reminder that accessibility and inclusion create opportunities for authentic achievement.","fullyFundedDate":1776447487353,"projectUrl":"project/get-messy-with-mural-making/9966345/","projectTitle":"Get Messy with Mural Making","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kristen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9919951_orig.jpg?crop=2217,2217,x161,y604&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1743171926459","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/p53k88"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_98761","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":65,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"US Census Data for the surrounding geographic area","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"Census ZCTA","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":64.7,"schoolId":98761,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about P053K @ 088K on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"P053K @ 088K","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/district-75-city-wide-programs/p053k-088k/98761"}
