Myself and the 8th grade ELA teacher have placed a huge focus on increasing independent reading within the classroom and the library. Students complete \"book tastings\" to find books, get comfy in the library, and read! Unlike whole class reads, independent reading allows students to choose books they will enjoy and meet their needs as readers.\r\n\r\nStudents were able to select books that interested them from the selection to supplement the books we can provide at school. This allows students to have materials they can read over the summer and during breaks when the school library is not open. It has been well documented that having books in the home is a key predictor to academic success. Lower income students are less likely to have a robust home library compared to their higher income peers. The book donations from this project have allowed students to add books directly to their home library and have given students the experience of selecting a book to call their own.
