My classroom is located in a very diverse area where children come from all walks of life. In my instruction, I always look to use books as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors.\r\n\r\nAs windows, students can view the lives and experiences of others through text. For example, learning about holidays or cultures around the world in the book Our Favorite Day of the Year by A. E. Ali. As mirrors, students can see themselves in the characters and the story. One of the most impactful moments in my teaching career occurred when a student shared that their favorite books have characters that look like them. As sliding glass doors, students become immersed in the world and experiences of diverse characters. This provides an even deeper understanding of the world around them. \r\n\r\nYour support has allowed my students to see and understand the diverse world around them, while also seeing themselves portrayed in some truly high-quality literature.
