Having the book in their hands has made a real difference in both confidence and engagement. The Giver has allowed us to teach and practice essential skills in a meaningful way, including building reading stamina, using context clues to understand vocabulary, making inferences, and backing up ideas with evidence from the text. Instead of reading feeling like work, students are starting to see it as something they can do and something worth thinking about.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and supportive. We read in manageable sections, then pause for structured discussions so students can process the story out loud and hear how others are thinking. We also use journal prompts to help students slow down, reflect, and put their thinking into words, often connecting the novel to real life choices, fairness, emotions, and the idea of a perfect society. This combination of reading, talking, and writing helps students understand more deeply and gives them repeated practice organizing their thoughts.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books have helped some students who typically shut down during reading feel successful. Students who rarely volunteered are contributing to discussions because they have strong opinions about the community in the story and the decisions characters make. Others have shown pride in being able to follow along, find the exact part of the text they want to reference, and explain their thinking. Your generosity did not just provide books. It provided access, confidence, and a shared experience that is helping my students grow as readers and as thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1760389132441,"projectUrl":"project/bring-the-giver-to-life/9819851/","projectTitle":"Bring the Giver to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Trifeletti","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1455097_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1474027897215","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-trifeletti"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_22952","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":373,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":97,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":0.0,"schoolId":22952,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Adironack High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Adironack High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/adirondack-central-school-district/boonville-high-school/22952"}
