High interest series, graphic novels, and historical fiction books grab my students' attention and keep their interest. \r\n\r\nI have enjoyed reading some of these books aloud to my class as shared read alouds too. The groans that I hear when I get to the end of a chapter and put the book away until the next day fill my teacher heart with joy. \r\n\r\nStudents have been reading so much more, and therefore learning new vocabulary, different points of view, all about plot elements, and most importantly, learning to love the act of reading. The number-only playing cards have been especially helpful for math games. In the past, we used traditional playing cards, and the face cards often caused unnecessary confusion for students. Now, students can focus on the math instead of figuring out what each card represents. The ten-frame playing cards have also been wonderful for strengthening number sense and helping students visualize quantities in different ways.\r\n\r\nThe number lines have made an equally important impact. Some of my students still need a concrete, visual representation when solving problems, and having number lines readily available gives them a tool they can independently reach for when they need support. Our educational assistant can also use these resources during small-group and one-on-one instruction to reinforce skills with students who need additional practice. I love seeing these materials used every day and watching students discover that there are many different ways to make sense of math. One of my favorite moments has been watching students stand side by side solving a problem, erase an idea, try something new, and explain their thinking to a classmate.\r\n\r\nThe students were immediately excited when they saw that math would not always mean sitting at a desk with a worksheet. They love having the opportunity to move around the room and work on the boards. I have also noticed that students are more willing to take risks because mistakes can simply be erased and revised. The boards have made student thinking much more visible to me, which allows me to quickly see who understands a concept and who needs additional support.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the year, we will use these materials with new math concepts and increasingly challenging problems. My goal is for students to become more confident explaining their reasoning, learning from one another, and seeing themselves as capable mathematicians. One of my favorite things is watching a student independently reach for a manipulative when they are stuck and then seeing that moment when the concept finally clicks.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful that you chose to invest in my students and our classroom. During this review time, students use their red pencils to make corrections, add information, or adjust their original thinking.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most is that these are not \"grading pencils.\" The red marks are not about pointing out what students got wrong. Instead, they provide a visual record of learning and growth. Students are beginning to feel more empowered to try challenging problems independently because they know mistakes are something they can revisit and learn from. The coop has quickly become a favorite place for students to visit. They love checking on the chickens, watching their behaviors, helping care for them, and learning more about what they need to stay healthy and safe. What may look like chicken wire and lights to some has become a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity for our students.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue involving students in caring for and learning about our chickens throughout the school year. We hope to use the coop to encourage responsibility, curiosity, kindness toward animals, and connections to what we are learning in the classroom.
