My students were so excited to finally be able to read the books that they see on the shelves at Walmart and in TikTok reels. Several students helped me unpack the boxes and it was like Christmas. They even bickered over who got to read certain books first!\r\n\r\nMy ultimate goal as an English teacher is to increase my students' reading scores in English. But to be strong readers in their second language, they must be strong, passionate readers in their home language. In addition, building knowledge of American popular culture provides them with topics of conversation to use with their peers, and gives them a way to participate in the larger reading community of the classroom.\r\n\r\nNot only have my students enjoyed the new books in class, many have checked them out to take home and share with their families. They have also found other books they want to read and asked me to order them, which I am happy to oblige. I am thrilled with the excitement these books have created for my ELL readers.
